Intervention Area

Intervention Area

The Project’s intervention area spreads within Epirus District, in Ioannina Regional Unit which is located in our country’s northwest section and is the largest one of the four Epirus Regions.

Pogoni Municipality

Pogoni Municipality is the Epirus Region Municipality that formed in 2011 by joining the preexisting Municipalities Ano Kalama, Ano Pogoni, Delvinaki, Kalpaki and the Pogoniani and Lavdani Communities. It consists of villages, the largest of which is Kefalovryso and Kalpaki is its capital. Furthermore, Delvinaki, which has a very wealthy history (founded in 1081), has been appointed as the Municipality’s historical seat.

Ex Municipality of Ano Kalama

Ano Kalama Municipality used to be a Municipality of the Ioannina Regional Unit, formed by the Kapodistrias programme through the merging of older communities in the area, which then came to be the Municipality’s Municipal Regions. It operated during 1999 - 2010 and was then cancelled through the application of the Kallikratis programme to be included in the new Municipality of Pogoni. It used to be in the west section of the Regional Unit. It used to take up an area of 86.5 Km2 and had a total population of 3,070 residents. Parakalamos settlement used to be the seat of the Municipality.

Ex Municipality of Ano Pogoni

Ano Pogoni Municipality used to be a Municipality of the Ioannina Regional Unit, by the Kapodistrias programme through the merging of older communities in the area, which then came to be the Municipality’s Municipal Regions. It was cancelled when the Kallikratis Programme was applied and was included in the new Pogoni Municipality. It used to be in the northwest section of the Regional Unit, at the slopes of mount Dousko. It used to take up an area of 137 Km2 and had a total population of 1.663 residents. Kefalovryso settlement used to be the seat of the Municipality.

GRECIA SALENTINA

The Greek-speaking villages of Grecia Salentina have formed the Union of Greek-speaking Municipalities. Kalimera, Sternatia, Corigliano d' Otranto, Martano, Castrignano dei Greci are the ones with the most Greek spirit. In them, the Grekanic language, “griko”, is preserved more than in any other village. In the rest of the villages like Melpignano, Soleto, Golino, Martiniano, although the Greek dialect is not widely spoken for a few years now, the participation of all the Communities in the Union shows their desire to preserve their elements originating from their Greek past and preserve their cultural heritage. For that same reason, the Union accepted other, neighboring villages, which are characterized Greek-speaking, such as Cutrofiano, Carpignano and Koursi.
