Municipality of Calimera

3.jpg

Calimera is a small town of 7.296 inhabitants in southern Italy, the so-called Magna Grecia. It is a part of the province of Lecce, located in the geographically isolated area of Grecia Salentina, of the peninsula of Salento, where the Greek element remained unchanged until modern times. According to tradition, the name of the town is due to a traveler, who when passed by the area, asked a peasant the name of the settlement. The latter, not understanding the foreign language, nodded in greeting to the passerby traveler by saying "Calimera". The inhabitants of the town, apart from Italian, speak also Grecanic, an idiom of the region that combines Greek and Italian elements. Apart from the language, the Greek influence is evident in the traditions of the residents of the area.

Municipality of Zollino

Zollino is an Italian town of 2.072 inhabitants in the province of Lecce, in Apulia. It is located in the hinterland of Salento, about 18 km. south of the capital and is a part of the Greek Salento. The origin of Zollino is still uncertain: some say it was founded by the Greeks of Japigia, the neighboring Apigliano, while others say it came from a rural population of the nearby town of Soleto. However, the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as it is evidenced by the numerous megalithic works preserved such as the menhir of Agia Anna. In ancient times the city of Zollino was a strategic point, which functioned as a passage between the countries of the Ionian and the Adriatic coast.
